JOHNSON
NOVOPALAST
The Novopalast is a projected landmark site for Newcastle, celebrating a change from the traditional architectural tropes around Newcastle. The implementation of glass caging around the site pays irony to the superficial protection of the original western arts building, in contrast to the ignorance around Indigenous heritage around Newcastle.
The buildings are placed around a natural centre, acting as their own protection to the Indigenous land. The multicomplex 'The Lockbox' incorporates an immense grouping of experiences available at all times of day, with the amphitheater 'Terrarium' acting a place of connection and art.

THE LOCKBOX
The Lockbox is a large multicomplex that consists of:
- A Hall space
- Gallery Spaces
- Food Courts
- Retail Outlets
- Restaurants
- Outdoor Viewing Spaces
- Nightlife Opportunities
- Amenities
The general structure of the building is large concrete beam framing, representing oversized cage bars. Weaved in-between are larger than life shutters, allowing maximum airflow & pertaining views.
The ground floor has a large hallspace that replicates a box within the bars & shutters, created using reformed brick to mimic the decay & superficial protection of the Western Arts building in the centre of the site, but not the Indigenous land on which it remains.
This structure stands as an ironic expression of the mistreatment of Indigenous land in Newcastle, contrasted to the abhorrent protection of western introduced sites, including the one on this very space.
The Lockbox stands as a tall monument for all Novocastrians to enjoy, and learn at.

Wrapping the entirety of the building and
it's interior walls, are points of decay, including
the already mentioned reformed brick.
All plumbing pipes are exposed, showing copper-plated piping, that adds layers of depth to the site's purpose and the message that it spreads. The decay points are an
art form in themself, giving the building a new identity as each minute passes.
Some of the piping to the building will run around the exterior, creating a complex pattern surround the cage, a cage within a cage within a cage.
TERRARIUM
An amphitheater built upon a large reformed brick arcade style area underneath, The Terrarium doubles as nightly entertainment, quick access between Honeysuckle & the Newcastle Interchange, and a place to hang out with your friends to enjoy a meal during the day.
Boasting impressive facilities, access to all, and wonderful shows, The Terrarium fills that missing gap in Honeysuckle's nightlife. Allowing safe passage & entertainment at all hours, this will bring people to the site.
Lovers of architecture within Newcastle will also appreciate the approach of a more spherical building, being clustered in & around all square shapes, the Terrarium sticks out like a butterfly between cocoons filled with moths.
The amphitheater itself has it's own snack bar, projector & screen, sound utilities, backrooms for performances, merchandise stalls & hundreds of seats for maximum capacity within viewings!

Whilst the bottom is built out of reformed brick to further the decay theme, the Terrarium itself is built out of a green painted stainless steel frame, with an EFTE wrapping inbetween the beams. This wrapping system allows for an incredibly thermal material that both allows natural light into the space, whilst maintaing the illusion of the caged space to mimic The Lockbox.

DRAFT
The cafeteria is a double-serving museum, cafe, and storage space for the site. It supplies a ridiculous amount of amenities for the site whilst still mainting its heritage.
Small changes were made to the base building, including incorporating a sliding barn door on the exterior, blowing the windows out with new wooden frames, replacing the roof with a topside terrace area, and adding additional staircases & elevators for accessibility.
Most control of the site & its responsibilities are maintained within this building, while still promoting learning, leisure, and interaction with the site in an entirely new way.
